The Spring/Summer 2023 “Wearable Art” edition of Rouge Magazine investigates the relationship between fashion and visual artwork by dissecting their interactions across four different art styles: Impressionism, Fauvism, Art Nouveau, and Abstract.

For one of my pieces, grouped into the Fauvism category, I asked a question: Does fashion imitate life? Lending inspiration to Oscar Wilde’s famous curiosity, my piece examines how fashion reflects and responds to societal and political movements. From the feminists of the 1960s to the countercultural impact of the hippies in the 1970s, and the rise of streetwear and sneaker culture in the 1990s driven by music and media, fashion consistently mirrors cultural changes. It also explores contemporary trends, such as space-inspired aesthetics, highlighting fashion’s role as a dynamic response to the ever-changing societal landscape.

Wearable art, continued

For my second article, “The Computed Contemporary,” I explore how pioneering designers Iris van Herpen, Julia Koerner, and Noa Raviv are redefining ultramodern couture by integrating technology and sustainability into their work. Van Herpen’s use of 3D printing and collaboration with architects pushes the boundaries of traditional fashion, merging femininity with the chaotic beauty of nature. Koerner’s focus on sustainability and her work in Black Panther blend advanced technology with cultural traditions, offering a new perspective on haute couture. Raviv’s innovative use of 3D printing to create intentionally flawed designs challenges conventional aesthetics, highlighting a creative tension between purity and imperfection.

Collectively, these designers represent a transformative shift in contemporary fashion, where architectural precision, environmental consciousness, and artistic exploration converge to push the limits of what is possible in modern couture.
